Debbie and James Fallows in their book, Our Towns: A 100,000-Mile Journey into the Heart of America mention a change to the abbreviation STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, the focus of these subjects in our schools to prepare our children cope with life and become contributing members to society. The authors explain why the Arts are an important part of the integral development of the human being and of the communities and ultimately the society they create the fabric for. (I include Civics as the art of living in society, which I feel deserves some attention as a subject we teach our children to be aware of and to master.)

The Fallows suggest inserting the  A from Arts into STEM to create STEAM.

Let me suggest a way we might do one better than that. Make a small change to the Fallows’ inclusion of the Arts in education. We can promote the deliberate awareness of community and mutual trust by simply moving the S of STEAM from the beginning to the end: TEAMS.

We add A from Arts to STEM to make TEAMS.
